The Image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, also referred to as Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, is a beloved icon of the Virgin Mary, known for its striking depiction of her holding the Child Jesus. The image portrays Mary in a traditional Byzantine style, with a gentle yet powerful expression. She is shown with the Christ Child in her arms, who gazes outwards, looking both calm and vulnerable. Surrounding them are the Arch Angels Michael and Gabriel, each holding the instruments of Christ's Passion, showing the imminent suffering that the Holy Family will face. Jesus' distress is clear when he loses a sandal while rushing into his mother’s arms for comfort. This iconic image symbolises Mary as a compassionate and loving protector, offering perpetual help to those who seek her intercession.

The image is thought to have originated in Crete between the 13th and 15th centuries. The original icon is traditionally believed by some to have been painted by St. Luke himself. Known for its miracles, it has been connected to many healings and blessings over time. This sacred icon has gained great reverence and has been recognised by several Popes throughout history.
